We are stronger together than we are alone!

walkingIt takes a special person to dedicate time, love, and patience to a pet. A lot of care and responsibility is required, especially when it comes to training or learning how to walk a dog.

-Walk in front of your dog or beside of your dog. By doing this, your dog will see you as the leader.

- No. Headphones. Ever. When you are walking, your attention should always be on your dog and your surroundings.

- No talking on cell phones. Except in an emergency.

- Practice makes perfect. Train your dog how to walk using a loose leash, to politely sit at street corners and when you stop to talk to someone.

- Manage your dog’s behavior. Do not assume that it is okay for your dog to interact with every dog and every human you come across. Not only is it rude, but it can also trigger unexpected, and maybe unwanted, reactions.

- Carry treats. Everyone knows that dogs love treats! After your dog has maintained the proper state of mind, reward him by allowing him to sniff around and by having a great tasting treat!

- Make sure your dog is healthy. Before starting any exercise program.

- Do not let your dog run off-leash. The only exception would be in a fenced dog park.

- Pay attention to your dog’s body language. Your dog will alert you about anything that seems out of place on the street or trail long before you become aware of it. fd808013cb76ec488dc14950486b826fWhether that is another dog approaching, a biker flying down the trail toward you, or an animal trailing you, an early warning can help you manage the situation – but only if you are paying attention.

- Use good equipment. Good equipment is essential. Make sure that your dog’s collar is well fitted. Does your dog need a harness? Is the leash the appropriate length? Inspect the fit and condition of all your equipment frequently. Ensure that your dog wears a tag with current information at all times.

-Rest is necessary and get shade when you can.Do not overdo it, especially in the heat of the summer. Find a shady spot to rest for a couple of minutes along the walk.

-Give yourself enough time for the dog walk. Dogs are like humans, they like routines. Taking walks in the morning are ideal. It is recommended that you set aside 30 minutes to an hour every day. The specific needs of each dog differ.

Finally, at the end of the walk, do not forget to reward your dog. Provide a meal after the walk and fresh water. Please, don’t forget to set a good example by always picking up after your dog!
