btpoopsThis is something that happens in the best of homes, a sudden bout of vomiting or diarrhea. When our Bostons exhibit this unexplained fluid out pouring it is always a unwelcome worrisome event.  It usually occurs just as we are leaving for work or company is coming over. Although normally nothing to worry about, (besides getting it cleaned up) sometimes it is a symptom of another problem.
If your dog is not showing other signs of illness, you can save yourself a trip to the vet if you wait 12 hours.

If the dog is acting normal the best advice and what we usually do is just take the Boston off food for 24 hours. Most sage advise tell you that his digestive system needs a break. If you follow this advise you will need to be prepared for a hungry dog begging you for food. Yes you will fill guilty.  But let me assure you this is not going to starve him... Do not give in... Do keep fresh water available at all times. When it is time to feed your "starving" Boston it is suggested that you only provide him about 1/4 of his normal meal. If all is well you can give him the rest of in in small amounts a few hours apart. The next day you should be able to feed him as usual.

IMG 8136Now here is the standard recommendation: If at any point the diarrhea or vomit does not stop and returns again...  If he seems sick in any other way (stops playing, is lethargic etc) you take him to the Vet.(Or at least call him for advise).

Lori Trachtenberg  "My vet told me if they vomit once, no food til the next morning. If they vomit twice, we go to ER/vet for fluids/anti-nausea meds."
Rosmaire Kelly "When I worked for a vet it was no food for 24 hours for vomiting and a vet visit if it continues more than once or twice. Don't remember what to do for loose stools."

Jessica Mills Brown  "If vomiting AND diarrhea,  You need to go to the vet ASAP for fluids. Absolutely no food and only ice chips. But time for the vet."

For those who are dog handlers and experienced with caring for the dogs in their life: There are some other suggestions when all seems normal but the Boston's not quite over the upset: These are provided by some of our social media  a d BTN, friends and readers.

BTN suggests: " After the first 24 hour period- You can also choose to substitute their dog food for a 50:50 mix of boiled white rice and boiled lean hamburger during that time.  and give small portions every 3-4 hours."

Christina Wright, Mary Cates Ballard,  Sue Barry  "Pumpkin, canned pumpkin" (Not the pie seasoned canned pumpkin,)

Just wanted to let you know that I finally tried the trial pack of Proviable that the vet gave me as Maggie's stools were not firming up with the usual bland diet and antibiotics like they usually do. It works in 2 days.

Other suggestions

Feed small amounts of a bland diet, consisting of two-thirds rice, sweet potato, and oatmeal and one-third cooked fish, cottage cheese, or boiled chicken. Feed only half the amount of a typical meal a few times a day, rather than one or two large meals a day. Add herbal products to soothe the stomach. Contact your veterinarian if your dog begins vomiting again.¹

What is vomiting?  Vomiting is the forceful expulsion of stomach contents through the mouth.pugsick

What is the difference between vomiting and regurgitation?  In regurgitation, the food that is expelled comes from the mouth or esophagus, versus the stomach. Vomiting involves the forceful contraction of stomach muscles; regurgitation does not. Both vomiting and regurgitation can occur right after eating or drinking, or up to several hours later.

Whis do these terms mean?  Dog stool, Dog poop, Dog Feces, are interchangeable terms. Feces (Also called stool.) The solid waste that is left after food is digested. Feces form in the intestines and pass out of the body through the anus.
