lincoln cabinet emancipation proclomation Abraham Lincoln and Animal Welfare! What’s the connection?

While Abraham Lincoln gets credit for keeping the nation united, helping to end slavery, and delivering The Gettysburg Address, many people forget one of the greatest political moves made by Ol’ Abe. A study of the Cabinet of the Lincoln Presidency reveals a risky, but wise, move. Abraham Lincoln appointed political enemies, and very vocal critics to Cabinet positions. This is very different from the politics we are familiar with. Lincoln was willing to see strengths and abilities, instead of focusing on differences of opinion.

A couple of years ago, our animal control program faced some very vocal and bitter criticism. Our shrewd department head made the “Lincoln” move. All of our critics and detractors were invited to a meeting to discuss their concerns. Our shelter and our animal control program opened the doors, and hid nothing from them. Those who came to the meeting joined together to form a new non-profit partnership. They learned about the limitations of a public run shelter, and filled in the gap with their volunteer efforts and fund raising. At this writing, the group averages 600 volunteer hours per month. No animal is denied veterinary care. And our adoption rates have never been higher.

Our individual opinions may vary on many issues. However, we have found that we are all here to serve the animals of our community. We are stronger together!
